Grantee on the road: Sofiane Ouissi

Today, AMA grantee Soufiane Ouissi travels from Tunis to Kinshasa to participate in the 6th edition of the international arts festival Connexion Kin, which is being held between July 2 and 12.

Sofiane Ouissi is a choreographer, dancer and curator based in Tunis. He completed his initial training in dance at the Conservatoire de musique et de danse and the Centre national de la danse in Tunis, before going on to train and perform in Paris and Brussels in the late 1990s. Since moving back to Tunis in 2007, he has taught at the institut supérieur de Musique et d’Art Dramatique and at the national Circus School while working on various choreographic projects. Together with his sister Selma Ouissi, he has also played a vital role in the development of Tunis’ cultural sector by founding the Association L’Art Rue, an association devoted to developing contemporary art in public space, as well as the collective rural art project Laaroussa and Z.A.T., a free magazine devoted to art in public space.

In Kinshasa, Sofiane will work to create new networks for L’Art Rue in view of establishing it as a Pan-African and Global South-oriented organization. His ambition is to create new ways of thinking, living and creating that will unite North Africa with sub-Saharan Africa. He hopes that his meetings with various artists and cultural practitioners in Kinshasa will lead to new residencies, creative works, and opportunities for experimentation linking the two regions.

AMA wishes Sofiane safe travels and a fruitful stay in Kinshasa!
