7 artists learnt to design their first small website in 3 days, place images and text and plan the way forward. I gave a powerpoint presentation to all Greatmore artists and office and a question and answering session with lunch discussion which should encourage more exchange of artists between Kenya and Cape Town. 2 days of meetings with office adminstration and advisory board were completed, information shared and possible exhibition exchange discussed. I visited the top 5 Cape Town galleries and met gallerists and shared business cards and brought catalogues, art newspapers and magazines for the Kuona Trust library. To get enough time with the Greatmore staff and board who were busy, to try to dedicate enough time to go through both organisations programmes and sharing good and bad experiences and activities. We overcame this by having dinners together every evening outside the office to discuss shared goals and missions for the organisations. It seems there is a big divide between the commercial galleries and artist studios spaces. We discussed ways of overcoming this and funding problems. South Africa has a more advanced infrastructure for art with National Art Council, national galleries, lottery fund that assists art organisations, University art education, commercial art galleries, curators and critics, art journals and publications and a business mentoring programme for the Arts unlike Kenya and most of Africa. We have much to learn from each others organisation. To schedule further exchanges, bring an administrator from Greatmore Studios to Kuona Increase artistic exchange between Kenya and South Africa, starting with sending a Kenyan artist to Johannesburg for a residency at Greatmore’s sister organisation the Bag Factory in October 2009. To share relevant proposals and documents and names of interested artists from both countries and further a field who have participated in activities To put together an exhibition of works on paper from Kenya to be shown in Cape Town and vice versa. Thus boosting exchange and giving artists an opportunity to show internationally To come up with new ideas and activities to engage the visual arts scene in both countries and cross fertilise these ideas.
