On the 10 of August, Sharon, Craig and myself, Bree Tonga, traveled to Kenya to attend the Lola Kenya Screen children’s film festival. When we arrived we were divided into different groups. Sharon was put in the Jury, Craig in the press and I was put in the production class.
Our facilitator was Eid Abdel Latif. We were asked to write stories and three of the best stories were chosen for animating. I wrote a poem that was chosen to be animated. The poem was called “Darkness in the Light”. We were taught how to make the characters out of clay and to animate them using stop motion.
I learnt that if you want to get something done, especially in animating and production, you have to be serious and responsible. I also learnt how to interact with other children from different cultures and backgrounds and I made many new friends, not only from Kenya but from Uganda and Tanzania.
Here is the poem that I wrote.
“Darkness”
Even though my mind the light shines so bright,
It hurts my eyes
I see and feel darkness
Darkness in my mind caused by frustration
Darkness in my heart because there is no one
who understands me for being different from everyone else
Darkness in my soul for all the pain and drama I cause my loved ones
And for people not loving me and excepting me for who I am
I fear that if I can not change
I will always have a part of me filled with darkness
Someone please set me free and bring me back to the light.
