Thanks to the Art Moves Africa program, I was able to participate in the 50th Annual Conference of FIRT organised this year by the University of Stellenbosch between 10 and 14 July. My presentation entitled « Fields of Silence in Moroccan Performance Studies Emerging Sites of Hybridity » focussed mainly on the transpossition of indigenous performance genres such as al-halqa and l-bsat in Moroccan postcolonial theatre since the 1960s. The implication of such negotiation is the production of a third theatrical space that is liminal and hybrid through and through. This presentation was subject to debate in South Africa about the prospects of an Arabo-Islamic theatre.
Another main achievement in South Africa is the implementation of the Arabic Theatre Working Group in FIRT for the first time in 50 years. Thanks to AMA I am now one of the convenors of the group. This group seeks to broaden our understanding of the hitherto relatively neglected theatre and performance traditions of the Arab and Islamic world. […]
My participation was extremely fruitful on both the personal and professional levels, as I was the first Moroccan to present Moroccan theatre in such an international gathering of over 600 participants from all corners of the world. »
