Actor, director and AMA grantee Sèdjro Giovanni Houansou is currently in Bamako (Mali) to present his new theatrical piece in Les Praticables Festival (24-28 November).
Born in Cotonou in 1987, Sèdjro Giovanni Houansou defines himself as an artist and activist writing “Africa from a sociocultural and political perspective.” After studies in Law, Governance and Democracy, he made his big shift to the theatre in 2012, with his first piece 7 milliards de voisins. Published by Les éditions plurielles, it has since become one of the most popular pieces in Benin. He is the founder of SUDCREA, a platform dedicated to providing opportunities for first-time playwrights in Benin; Les didascalies du monde, a space for monthly readings by Francophone writers; and benincrea.net, a platform for sharing opportunities on the continent.
Les Praticables is a new festival, currently in its 2nd edition, whose aim is to mobilize a neighbourhood in Bamako for the production and performance of new, original, citizen-led plays, created by young activists and authors with the support of a network of experienced professionals. Sèdjro Houansou will be presenting his new piece, “Les inamovibles,” which was the winner of the 2018 RFI Theatre prize. The piece questions South-North migrations, taking inspiration from the situation of people who come back to their country after emigrating as well as from the experiences of those who stay behind waiting for their loved ones to return.
We wish Sèdjro a fruitful stay in Bamako and much inspiration and success for his future projects!
